Down under - An inside report on the NZ Sprint Championships

The 2011 New Zealand Canoe Sprint Championships which included the Oceania Canoe Sprint Championships were held over three days from the 18-20 February at Blue Lake, Rotorua.

New Zealand’s paddlers faced strong competition from Australia as well as the smaller island nations of Samoa and the Cook Islands.  This was the Cook Islands first taste of Sprint kayak racing as there main paddle sport is Va-a or Outrigger canoeing.

Open Men’s 1000m Nelo 2nd
Steven Ferguson took out the A Final in 3.30.79 closely followed by Troy Burbidge 3.32.42 and Darryl Fitzgerald.

Open Men’s K2 1000m Nelo 1st and 2nd
Steven Ferguson teamed up with Darryl Fitzgerald to clearly win the Open Men’s K2 1000m in 3.11.50 from Liam O’Loughlin and Troy Burbidge in 2nd 3.15.94 ahead of Chad Alston and Glenn Rypp from Australia 3rd 3.16.29.

The Women’s 500m Final 3 Nelo K1’s on the podium.
Lisa Carrington took 1st in 1.47.30 closely followed by Teneale Hatton in 2nd 1.48.86 from Hannah Davis from Australia in 3rd in 1.49.51.

The Women’s 200m Final Again 3 Nelo K1’s on the podium

Lisa Carrington continued her winning streak taking the Open Women’s K1 200m in 39.16 from Hannah Davis from Australia 39.60 followed closely by Teneale Hatton 40.71. 

Open men K2 200m Final

Matt Goble teamed up with Chad Alson to take the K2 200m by .2 of a second from Steven Ferguson and Darryl Fitzgerald.
